What a podiatry appointment covers

The podiatrist is the healthcare professional who looks after the foot: the skin and the nails, but also how you put your weight through it and what that causes further up. Plenty of knee, hip and back pain starts right down at the bottom.

  • Ingrown toenails, hard skin, corns, fungal nails or verrucas.
  • Pain in the heel, the sole or the toes when walking or running.
  • The feet of people with diabetes, which need regular checks and safe nail cutting.

What we treat

These are the most common reasons people come to see us. If yours is not on the list, just ask: that is precisely what the initial assessment is for.

Chiropody

Complete foot care: nails, hard skin, callouses and cleaning, with sterile instruments.

Ingrown toenails

Treatment for the nail that digs in, and an assessment of why it keeps growing in that way.

Gait assessment and insoles

A study of how you land and, if appropriate, insoles made from that examination and checked afterwards in clinic.

Diabetic foot care

Checks on sensitivity and circulation, nail and hard skin care, and footwear advice to prevent injuries.

Children’s and sports podiatry

Foot checks for children and teenagers, and for athletes: rubbing, overload and choosing the right footwear.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have chiropody?

It depends on how your nails and skin grow, so there is no single figure that suits everybody. In clinic we tell you what interval fits your case.

Are insoles made the same day?

No. First your gait is studied, then they are made from that examination. Once you have them, they are checked in clinic and adjusted if need be.

I am diabetic. Can I cut my own toenails at home?

It is worth having a podiatrist check your feet regularly, because diabetes can reduce sensitivity and let a small wound go unnoticed. In clinic we explain what you can do yourself and what is better left to us.
